Aries 22° (April 11)

I will speak with lawyer today even though it is Sunday, as things have gotten crazily out of hand. Seconds of fish pie for lunch today and I will make an escarole salad with homemade candied walnuts, Roquefort and pear, with roasted garlic dressing, one of the dozens of dishes in our regular repertoire. But the focus is on writing for sure and getting into a good rhythm with all of that. I have come up with the notion of ending the chapters on something of a poetic note. To that end I’m trying a little something here as an experiment on the Aries woman:The majority of the Aries woman population will tell you they aren’t spiritual, but what they probably mean to say is that they see no separation between living a life of starkest reality and experiencing a sense of their own higher power, to use a well-worn term. Spirituality for the Aries woman basically boils down to doing no harm to others, which usually grows out of a conscious sense of not always having felt that way. In her youth and sometimes into middle age, Aries may not only be blatantly self-serving, she might even have accepted being considered “demanding,” “difficult,” “confrontational,” or “perpetually on the war path,” as the price to pay for having high standards and expectations, and being uncompromising as such. Any kind of spiritual practice is typically embraced by Aries as a means of dealing with her default perspective that hell is indeed others. It is most difficult for her to cultivate patience and humility and to lay down her arms against the slings and arrows she sees as being disproportionately aimed her way. She may decide to become a Buddhist, for instance, to deal with everybody else just as much as to cultivate an oasis of peace in herself. If everyone would stick to her same playbook there would be no need for the slightest transcendence. All kidding aside, Aries’ choice of spiritual path, which might be one of individual design, is motivated by self-protection and that of those who can’t necessarily or easily protect themselves, and the peace of mind that it provides. We say that the first sign of Aries represents the animal world, fauna, and the human condition, too, from that perspective, just as the second sign of Taurus stands for the world of vegetation, flora. Aries women especially are great animal lovers, while Taurus folks make up the bulk of the world’s frolicking dendrophiles. And, of course, this is borne out in the signs’ archetypes and mythologies. Athena wears skins and plumed helmets of horsehair, and snakes as totems and in tribute to her animal nature, war gods and goddesses originating from spear-toting hunters and herders, deities of peoples who lived among animals, in one way or other.

I am now in my seventh year of writing this Blague. Year six, I went through the first five years, and excerpted from five Blagues per day, as a way of taking inventory of what came before. If there are any blocks of text following this paragraph that would be from the corresponding day last, the sixth, year.
