Cliché On A Disappointment

Libra 11°

I honestly feel sometimes, as we likely all do,  as if I’m born under an unlucky star. I would much rather have no opportunities than false ones, dangled in front of me, getting my hopes up only to have them dashed. I didn’t ask for the great assistance I was supposedly being given. It was offered. And I suppose I’m supposed to feel bad for having waited patiently for six months while people mull over the proposed work I handed over to them, only to have some great conference call, long-awaited, being just one more Unfortunately….

The whole reason I left the business of managers and lawyers and agents who lie for a living was so I didn’t have to feel this way. But the most incredible seeming opportunity lands in your lap, an offer really, let’s be frank. So you say okay. And then half a year later it’s turned into an excuse to wield some power of rejection. I never asked for it in the first place. People are freaking sadistic they really are. And what? I’m supposed to comfort myself with some belief in karma that they’ll get theirs? I’m not sure it works that way. Sometimes good things continue to happen to bad people. And this is exactly why I took myself out of the game: I am nobody’s reject. I am nobody’s victim of whim or avoidable circumstance. I decided long ago not to be led up some garden path. But you figure it’s such a close friend presenting you with the opportunity. And a very good friend indeed who shall remain so—not their fault. And what were we supposed to do? Say no to the opportunity. But how these things get turned around is beyond me. I just don’t want this sort of energy in my life as I did nothing to invite it. So I must just as easily let it fall to the wayside.

Meanwhile I’m mostly pissed off that I will lose another day to upset. I waited six months for a call to discuss the opportunity but instead the call was to dash it. Did not see that coming. And now I’m so upset I can’t even focus on the work that is at hand. My own work. The work nobody assigns me. The work I do for myself. Because I am a self-sufficient person who has never been really worked for anyone nor been on any kind of assistance nor had anyone give me any handouts. I have been working a job since I’m fourteen years old. And, like my father once said in the handful of praiseful things I remember him saying: “you live by your wits”. He meant that as a compliment.

Oh well live and learn; this too shall pass; insert cliche here. At least now there is no sense of being beholden. And, as is my blessing/curse, I already see the bright side. But I’m bone weary of wear from this emotional running raggedness, which is only the result of sloth. Still that bright side of not feeling pressured or to owe anyone anything. I have what I need and to have more or less is a choice. I don’t owe you or anyone anything.

Afterglow Marketing

Libra 10°

Targeting bigger Boston-based regional press we secured highly visible TV and print coverage this year. (PBS WGBH, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, others) Our PR-marketing plan focusses on editorial and broadcast, promotional events, posters, postcards, e-blasts, newsletters, web campaigns, new media and social networking, vehicle advertising, staged events, tours and cross-promotion with Dixon Place and The Public Theater in NYC, ART in Cambridge, UnCabaret in L.A., to name a few. We print programs touting our sponsors, but fail to afford advertising. Our branding is ubiquitously praised—a classy, recognizable logo, identity and collateral—with eye-catching posters and other imagery. We hope our new line of offense will be Adversiting with support from PR, shifting more to the national and international level. The impact of local coverage is arguable, while social media among local people and businesses is impactful. We launched a Playbill-Instagram initiative, via a photoblog led by our participating artists. We’ve scored national coverage from the Boston Globe (circulation 232,432 daily) The Huffington Post ( 4-11 million readers, daily) New York Magazine (circulation: 600K ); Media targets include The New York Times, (1,150,589 weekday; 1,645,152 Sunday, Online: 30 million/month);); Style.com, the Daily Beast (3-10 million daily);; DailyCandy.com (600,000 daily). Travel, in-flight and arts magazines will be a focus, as our global profile grows. Media websites will include NYPress.com, BroadwayWorld.com, TheNewYorker.com, Culturebot.com, Vogue.com, www.Out.com, www.Playbill.com have all provided coverage. Print advertising could be focused on Provincetown Magazine, Provincetown Banner, Cape Cod Times, Boston Globe; Providence Phoenix (80K); Time Out NY (86K); Boston Magazine (92K) given financial resource.

Afterglow Do Different

Libra 9°

I really hope you don’t mind my using this time to work on grants while double-dutying this copy for the Blague I currently have no real time for. I keep trying to get to the point of being caught up in the day and then also free in the day enough to just use this Blague to be funny and creative. I wear too many hats and have way too little help.

We have yet, in our eight year history, been alloted the funds necessary for a print and broadcast advertising budget. We work miracles with the press, but to go to the next level, we require more investment from the VSB and other sources. We could advertise in other festival towns around the world and draw, mainly LGBTQ, audiences from abroade. Meanwhile we want more local audience, too. And we hope to increase our ability to provide discounts to students and seniors especially, “gifting” Sparklerships (donations of $100), from donors not using them. This boosts attendance and good will among locals. We learned that social media like Instagram is essential for consciousness raising and seek to expand that. We find that private and business funding is unpredictable and seek to partner with more business owners who are the direct beneficiaries of audiences coming to town. We wish to engage local artists more and create more of a residency atmosphere whereby visiting artists can interface with locals. We strive to move works we’ve premiered to other venues with the “Made in Provincetown Afterglow seal of approval. We want more coverage on our work to preserve Provincetown’s little known theatrical heritage.

Measuring Afterglow Success

Libra 8°

Each Afterglow has been more successful than the previous one. We measure success in sales. And despite presenting many unknown artists, our sales per show were the highest ever. This means our curation is trusted and successful. Success is seen, too, in increased press. An entire segment of Open Studio on WGBH was dedicated to our work, added to features in Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Cape Cod Times, Playbill, The Huffington Post, The Dig, Edge, Boston Spirit,. Success is measured in increased awareness and attendance and in the uptick uptick in local audience and sponsorship. Collaborations with the Public Theater and American Repertory Theater mean more scope and renown. As works premiered and developed by Afterglow move to other stages—from Off-Broadway to London’s Soho Theater and beyond, our program credits are duly noted. More grants and sponsorships spell success: The Newlson Trust and the Mass Cultural Council continued their support along with successful artists and entertainment figures like Jim Hodges, Alan Poul, Mary Birdsong and David Bowd & Kevin O’Shea. Success is more artists seeking participation; and raising more money for other charitable causes via collaboration. Success is in the growth of subscribers and in the expansion of social media. Success derives from strangers in around the world showing support and visiting Provincetown during festival.

Afterglow Attendance

Libra 7°

Given our new venue, we presented 1/3 fewer shows this year over last, and yet attendance was way up. We measure attendance in ticket sales plus Sponsor passholders and “Sparklers” receiving half-price tickets. We offer Missionary Sponsorships to local businesses whereby 5 employees receive 1/2 price tickets. This further augments audiences, allowing more locals to attend. Afterglow’s hosting venue keeps precise records; and though we didn’t stage a free “townie” show this year, our ancillary events brought an additional 400 audience members to the attention of the festival. Afterglow has introduced Provincetown, now, to upwards of 70 artists, many of whom have become beloved of locals. Returning Afterglow artists now command bigger sold-out houses, just as the festival mission remains dedicated to presenting new artists and acts never before seen in Provincetown.

Afterglow’s Impact

Libra 6°

Afterglow consistently touts Provincetown as an perfect destination spot for travelers during festival week. Afterglow draws upwards of 85% of its audience from Off-Cape—mainly New England, the mid-Atlantic and the West Coast. Attendees secure lodging, frequent restaurants, bars, lounges and nightclubs and partake of the many shops, museums and galleries and services. Business owners cite an economic boon during Afterglow week—audiences and artists not only eat, drink and shop, but also take tours, rent bikes, ride ferries and sample all the town has on offer. Afterglow advertises town businesses via its website, programs and social media. Festival artists likewise promote businesses they frequent via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Afterglow disseminates information on town businesses to its artists and showgoers. Afterglow’s audience are well-heeled travelers who spend generously, tip freely, support local commerce and enrich the Provincetown’s economy. The festival has partnered with other non-profits, donating proceeds of its shows to such organizations as The Trevor Project, Camp Lightbulb, the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod and Helping Our Women (HOW). Afterglow tries to raise funds to produce work, increasingly, in the off-season and has planned ancillary programs, workshops and lab productions that attract participants year-round.

Afterglow Description

Libra 5°

I need to write some grant copy for my festival and I might as well work on it here.

Afterglow is Provincetown’s Live Performance Arts Festival. The 8th annual Afterglow takes stage September 10-16, 2018 at the Art House. Afterglow brings to Provincetown informed audiences from the region, country, and abroad to see its award-winning artists, who typically only appear in festival capitals like New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, London, Berlin, San Francisco, Manchester, Dublin, Edinburgh, and the like. Afterglow has earned Provincetown a star on the international festival map, opening dialogues with other festivals world-wide. Afterglow’s artists make headlines as social icons and activists; and range from the newly emerging to Grammy-, Tony-, Sundance-, Obie- and Academy- award- winners innovating performance as we know it. Afterglow presents solo plays, neo cabaret, progressive sketch, performance art, multimedia, dance, electronica, poetic/rap, rock opera, musical comedy and other forms, fostering Provincetown’s reputation as a important live-arts center, not just a commercial/resort entertainment town. Afterglow cultivates local talent—performers, designers, costumers, choreographers, composers, playwrights —in festival, and with ancillary productions. The festival created a “playwright’s initiative” and produced work at top venues/theaters under the “Afterglow of Provincetown” aegis. Afterglow reclaims Provincetown’s birthright as the birth place and incubator of the modern American stage, receiving support and promotion from Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater and Dixon Place in NYC and Oberon at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge where Afterglow produces the successful Glowberon series, now in its third expanded season. Works originated at Afterglow have moved Off-Broadway, to NYC, and to London, Los Angeles, Paris and other major cities around the globe. 256

Chart Notes Two

Libra 4°

With Sun in Cancer in the seventh house, you can be predisposed to seeing yourself too much through others’ eyes, and must make an effort to be more directive an objective in your outlook. “What other people think about you is none of your business” are words of wisdom to live by. On the upside, you are incredibly sensitive to others’ feelings and empathetic. You should applaud yourself for being caring, but be careful not to fall into too much care-taking.

You have a Capricorn rising which helps cut through the emotionality in your make-up. This provides you a high-status lens on the world and the ability to hold yourself up in high esteem. You may be saddled with responsibility, especially in your youth, made to act as an adult before your time. As you age, you grow down!

The Moon conjunct Neptune in your twelfth house, in Sagittarius, is a highly spiritual signature. You are probably more psychic than we are. At the very least you are intuitive to the max, and impressionistic in your approach to life—better off letting direction and opportunity emerge rather than asserting any kind of strict agenda. Flashes of genius happen in dreams.

Uranus, dignified in the eleventh house, opposing Chiron in the fifth poses a challenges to your creativity. You may feel a need to play (too) safe in the act of creation and to suppress freakier elements of your nature overall. It is your unique vision and eccentricities, however, that are your artistic strength. You need to get over feelings of shame or blame for having expressed yourself boldly in the past.

A conjunct of Jupiter and Mercury in your psychological eighth house T-square this opposition. Narrative therapy is especially helpful in getting to the root of pain that can rear its head and derail you. You want to dig deeper into inner dialogue as opposed to oversharing on the same topics with others. A person with this signature definitely has a story to tell, one that is profoundly personal but has universal resonance.

With Saturn in the ninth house there can be discomfort surrounding travel or even higher learning. These may trigger feelings of abandonment or nightmares regarding the succesful completion of projects. Hard to say whether it’s nature or nurture, but the environmental challenges that might have occured during intense periods of learning—or having to make geographical moves, or changing schools at certain times, have created a sense of dis-ease around leaving the safety of bubbles you’ve created for yourself.

You must realize that you are your own authority and you are not seeking approval on any level. You must dare to suck and dare to fail. Only then will you make gorgeous inroads into uncharted creative territory. Be as exaggerated as you feel!

Chart Notes One

Libra 3°

Since nobody ever reads this, and I’m not going to name names, I’m going to use this opportunity to work on a few charts for audience members attending our Xmas show (who already sent us their info in September!)

With Sun in Virgo in the fifth house, you’re a consummate creative working in tangible (Virgo is mutable-earth sign) media rather than the abstract. The Sun opposes Jupiter in Pisces in the eleventh house, which can make your creative output or appeal feel at odds with more widespread appeal or acceptance (in the short term); but the trick is to allow yourself to be “seen”, to think bigger to be bigger. Jupiter in Pisces can amplify a need to escape and to become lost in crowds or the fog of your own imagination. Jupiter also opposes Venus in the fourth house of, among other attributes, your home and private life. We imagine you have a fairly femmy aesthetic with a surplus of gorgeous things like ornaments, pillows, jewelry, make-up and collectibles. You might say it’s a crowded aesthetic, by no means spare.

Taurus rising gives you a rather innocent lens on the world and you might idealize your childhood or the trappings thereof. Since the ruler of your rising sign rules your entire chart, we double back to Venus to check it’s influence on you: As it makes square aspect to Neptune in your seventh house, this can have a bit of an arrested-development effect on your notion of one on one relationships. You are a romantic, even fantasist when it comes to relationships, but you can have difficulty with the more, shall we say, intense elements of intimacy. To coin a phrase by a dear friend: You want to keep it light and keep it moving in love. You yearn for deep connection but you aren’t easily wedged out of your comfort zone.

We find the healer, Chiron, in your twelfth house, which means you can keep deep-seated pain very much to yourself. Emotional wounds, especially, aren’t ones you readily acknowledge or share with others. Saturn in your third house suggests that there may have been a strictness in your upbringing or schooling, that structure was highlighted. Often children who come from military families have this signature. Saturn is in Cancer so you might have had to keep strict reins on emotions and, now, in adulthood, feel a need to more easily access your feelings.

In contract you have the Moon in the fourth house in Leo which suggests that, at your core, you are quite a strong person with important passions you pursue. We also see that your more nurturative parent might have been quite fiercely protective and championed your desire to slip into (and stay in) the realm of your imagination.

With Mars and Pluto conjunct (they operate as a team) in your fifth house, you are no stranger to difficulties; and have likely encountered a series of abrupt “endings” in your life whereby whole chapters have been suddenly, and not always willingly, put behind you. That said, this has enabled you with ability to move on from any struggles, a hallmark of your status as a survivor.

Whatever Prime Minister

Libra 2°

Although life is mostly entropy, especially, now, on sweeping scales, there is no going back. Things were better before but we can not recapture what is lost. We may say we have no part in it, but it is untrue and unwise to do so. Rampant narcissism is part of the equation; because as you’re all staring at your reflections, humanity is being exterminated in the literal and figurative senses, both. Even the many of the so-called activists I encounter are sadly also in it for the attention; they’ve latched onto the term to gain some kind identity but if you call yourself an activist you probably aren’t really one. I don’t call myself an activist—I would have no right to do so—neither do I hide my head in the sand or lose myself in the mirror. I belong to part of the population that is completely at a loss. I’m an idealist losing the war against greed who is fed up with trying to live in a country, in a world, where even those who are purposely cheated and disempowered don’t even realize it and instead support their oppressors. I’m blue in the face; and selfishly I just want to slip away to some remote shore or woodland retreat and not have to fight any more good fights. Everything is an argument. Will & Grace is an argument that seems to be weighted as much as the debate on gun control. I’m fatigued by my own opinions. And that was probably somebody’s goal. I long for increasing anonymity and genuine experience. I want to drop out or into something new and distant. I want to find a way to stop seeing the world as cruel and claustrophobic. I want to go fetal with my binky.
