Did a little grooming, got a little Sun, hier. I didn’t get as much done as I would have liked but I never do when I have so much to tackle on the home front let alone make some headway on all the moving book parts. But here I go, swinging low: Drawing on your flower-gods archetype, Taurus is characterized by myriad means and meanings of unfolding, all in accordance with the notion that a flower doesn’t open its petals halfway—it performs a full expression of itself. To unfold, first, means to relate key experiences to date, which we prescribe doing bit by bit, episodically, keeping a journal in which you record stand-out stories that come to mind, in no specific order—clearing your sign-ruled throat and voicing the second-house content of your life. Be short and sweet, imagining each journal entry as a little flower bed—a quick sketch of the episode. Time, like money, is a commodity under second-house rule; and meeting the moment with this simple, yet meaningful form of journaling puts you in the mindset of expecting and allowing, indeed inviting new stories to come to you, purposefully taking the perspective that time and experience itself is unfolding, occurring to you, as opposed to your trying to make things happen on some kind of clock. For you the road meets the rubber, instead of vice versa.

Well the truth comes out one way or another.  Going to switch gears today and try and get may hay on some fun text-box ideas. Catching up to myself for sure in the coming days and then full steam ahead, with both of us on same page. We got this: A famous (Aries) Diana Ross quote is: “Instead of looking at the past, I put myself twenty years ahead and try to look at what I need to do now in order to get there then.” Resisting the temptation to make some correlation between Athena goddess of wisdom and The Wiz, Miss Ross is definitely onto something. But let’s start with five years—we can always work up to twenty. So, Aries, project yourself five years into the future and, as a bit of narrative therapy, you going to tell us (yourself, really), speaking in first person in the present tense, exactly what you’ve been up to and accomplished during the last/next five years. Here’s a way to structure this assignment of self-reflective therapy. Block out five days. Each of the five days you’re going to perform the same task, which is to write the story of how “the past” five years have manifested for you. You must not read back on what you write/wrote until the five-day period is over.  At that point you will go back and read from the first day and see how it is your ideas of yourself and your accomplishments evolved even in just those five days. You will likely find that on day one you wrote about the “last” five years in different terms than you on subsequent days. The purpose of this prescriptive exercise is to gain insight into how you think about what is truly most important to you to achieve in this short span of life. Morever, the aim is to imprint on your subconscious what really matters to you. Without ever having to go back and refer to these five essays, you will instinctively begin to make decisions and take such actions that align with what you will have determined, over the course of these five days, are your truly essential goals.

Aries rules the head, and in our philosophy the face is especially significant when speaking about the Ram female—Ewe—as it is synonymous with identity and image. The symbol of the sign is meant to signify the Ram’s horns, but it also illustrates the brow line, connoting wisdom. The great Athena is both goddess of war and wisdom. Her totem owl, a wise symbol, is distinguished for its face, which, like a human, has eyes facing front. Athena fights the good fight, and is a singularly civilized, diplomatic deity, one of strict principles by which to live. She is forever keeping people in check, her myths mainly following a retaliatory theme where she (rather brutally) teaches lessons to those she considers wrong or out of bounds. And woe to any ancient who bragged about being better than she—Athena doesn’t take losing face lying down. You can relate, Aries. There is a pattern in her myths where she always takes on some disguise when appearing to the soon-to-be punished party. Likewise, Arya Stark’s religion is that of the many-faced god which involves her slapping on flesh masks she’s sliced off other people’s heads so to exact her own retaliatory acts. All that said, your mission, Aries, is to make a list of all the most prominent and present people in your life—this will be column one. Then, column two, list the role you play in relation to that person. Then, third column, record in a word or two what you want from this person, the role they should play in your life. Lastly, fourth column, try to pinpoint the “weapons” you use in an effort to bring about what you desire from them. Note: not all the names on the list will be allies; rather, as you keep your enemies close, you should include those about whom, like Arya, you have revenge fantasies. The point is for you to be totally honest about the many guises you genuinely wear, for ill or nil, by astrological design. Seeing all this on paper might inspire letting go of certain faces you put on or inspire you to double down on others.

Watched the Bo Burnham “Inside” show thought it great but some mixed feelings. Anyway some thoughts: In keeping with the first sign of Aries ruling the span of life from zero to seven years, the first card in the Major Arcana of the Tarot is The Fool, which is numbered zero, meaning unlimited potential. He is a vagabond, a wild man, looking skyward, while approaching a precipice. Like the sign of Aries, the Fool represents new beginnings. A clean slate, carte blanche, as befits the color white associated with Aries, symbolizing both innocence and surrender—the fool carries a white rose to hit home the symbolism. His ignorance of where he’s going seems rather blissful. He’s pure Id, the picture of surrendered Ego, with no major baggage, carrying all he needs for his life journey in a tiny bindle over his shoulder. Like the true you, Aries, he’s a minimalist, and he’s letting the proverbial it all go. And so are you going to: With all the time and energy you have spent bolstering and proving yourself, trying to make an impact, especially, counting and rattling off your accomplishments, impressing us with all you know and have done, it’s time to let go of all this accumulated Ego stuff. In so doing you are going to make a list of all your faults, foibles, failures, faux-pas, flops and fiascos and then, fool, you’re going to say something funny about them. Got my work cut out for me: The first astrological house of Aries is associated with the physical body as it is one and the same with spirit, symbolized by the element of fire. The upper-case Self is the intersection of the divine spark that animates us and our corporeal temple. Embodying the warrior archetype, Aries is wired to attack life, to demonstrate through action who he is and what he is fighting for. The first house is akin to the hardware of a computer, the system on which additional programs are run. Not to say you’re basic, Aries, but life can be simpler than you make it. You needn’t prove yourself to the world as much as you feel you do. So, we have prescribed for you what we call the sixty-percent resolution, to train your mind and spirit in the art of doing less and being more. You are literally going to lop-off forty percent from your schedule, to-do list and the hours you spend overworking, overdoing. Even if you are in a career where you feel you have to be in overdrive working overtime, trust: those who work smart instead of hard are those who succeed faster in their fields. Also, coming across as someone who has something to prove sends a message that you are, or consider yourself to be, somehow lacking. In addition to creating space in your daily calendar, you’re going to rise a half or full hour earlier than you normally do, so that you can move at a slower pace in the morning, maybe meditating for fifteen minutes, or just making you’re a.m. that much more Zen. As the day goes on you must check yourself for any signs of rushing, which is an absolute no-no. Imagine yourself sitting in the back seat of a chauffeured limousine instead of driving a racy sportscar. Do forty-percent less talking, too, in conversations, and that much more listening.

Pretty crappy Monday overall, but we will straighten everybody out. Work beckons: This works for the Leo man in a number of ways. His trademark confidence itself opens doors. There is never a whiff of desperation, or even the suggestion of a need in his for others to offer acceptance or approval or desired green lights. And he’s not about to jump through hoops or work too hard to convince anyone of his abilities or to provide him with breaks or legs up. He’s not looking for favors, he is offering himself as one. Being so sure of himself, so at ease and self-possessed, and so commanding a presence rightly suggests that he is a natural born leader who could easily head up a project, a department, a team, a company, or whole industry. On the flipside, Leo isn’t one to much consider in what areas he has need for improvement, which can be especially difficult in his personal relationships. He is disposed to call the shots in his love bonds, sometimes without even being aware of this default dynamic. Leo will have a lot of free reign in love relationships and family life, expecting others to revolve around his schedule, and he won’t make the kinds of compromises others necessarily feel they have to when settling into a long-term commitment. He understands early in life what his interests and indulgences might be and he will continue to prioritize solo pursuits over those of familial demand. That naturally occurring Leo feels nary a need to make alterations to his lifestyle, even as he may ascend to great success and become an increasingly higher earner. Many a Leo man might be making major bank without others even knowing it, as he often needs convincing to make upgrades to his living conditions, preferring to sock it away for a rainy day rather than squander on so-called luxuries. He tends to be a man of simple tastes. And he does have his weaknesses. Because he is so willful, it is difficult for him to come to terms with the fact that he might have addiction issues, admitting powerlessness in such a case going against his prideful grain, which brings us to another paradox: Although substance abuse can be an issue for the Leo, it is most often some form of gambling to which he is most susceptible, while any addiction at all has elements of playing Russian roulette. The shadow side of the fifth-house rule over fun and games can manifest in this form of risk-taking, and many a Leo man has found his luck run out one too many times. You know, we said in the first sentence of this chapter that Leo “is certain” that the game of life is one of self-determination and not one of chance, but we didn’t say he matched his behavior with that belief. He might convince himself—what is conviction after all?—that he gets where he wants to go in life by utilizing the sheer force of his sign-ruled backbone, but really he does spin the wheel much of the time, hoping to land on a desired opportunity, not working as hard to reach his goals as he may think he does. Like the male Lion in the wild, Leo can be rather lazy; it’s the female of the species that does all the hunting and rearing of her pride, the male mainly looking impressive and roaring a lot to scare prey out of hiding for the females to pick off, padding up to join in the fait accompli feast.

My father’s birthday. I don’t feel much. Off to work: To be a Leo man is to feel oneself quintessentially male, and human for that matter, predisposed to see himself as the most perfect embodiment, that paragon again, or the most typical, i.e. natural, of human beingness. Literally meaning the fifth essence, in ancient and medieval philosophy, quintessence was thought to be the highest element, after fire, earth, air and water, believed to be the substance of the celestial bodies as well as latent in all things. In modern terms, it is a hypothetical form of dark energy postulated to explain observations of an accelerating universe. The assignment of this elusive element to the heavens, while being hidden or dormant in everything, requires some unpacking. What the Romans called quinta essentia was, already to the Greeks, synonymous with the ichor, the blue blood, that ran in the veins of the gods, and ultimately the nobility, who claimed divine inheritance and the right to rule as such. Five, the number associated with the sign of Leo, is also central to proportionality in human beings as well as nature, from a mathematical perspective. We have cited Leonard DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man, that famed nude drawing of a male with arms and legs outstretched, as illustrating the human body having five appendages, the two arms and legs ending in five fingers and five toes, and the head, five openings as relate to the five senses. Likewise, the number five is central to the Golden Ratio, also called the Divine Proportion, and it can be derived from several formulas based on that number, most accessibly, geometrically—if you were to take a pentagon with five equal sides and then connect all the intersecting points inside the pentagon, it would form a five-pointed star all the lines of which would be in Golden Ratio. At the risk of losing you, here, Leo, your sign number five is mathematically linked to all concepts of quintessence as the most “typical” that is to say naturally occurring pattern in nature, here on planet earth, but also in the known cosmos, as the Golden Ratio, to which the number five is so central, repeats in the proportionality of the human body, in the patterning of plants and animals and the formation of galaxies—it is proof of some kind of natural and divine ordering, a recurring rhythm, the reality, and understanding, of which you are astrologically designed to embody. Gots lots to do: Bring on the new messiah: Beyond his default belief that he is god’s gift to the universe, typically everything in Leo’s demeanor says others should show gratitude on that score. He will have you know that you are fortunate to know him, even casually or vaguely, those inside his intimate sphere always on notice they can be cast out. One can’t help thinking of Robert DeNiro’s character Jack Byrnes in Meet The Parents with his “circle of trust” and eyeballing hand gesture suggesting he’s always watching you, like god, ready to punish you for your sin of disloyalty; the name Byrnes makes a nod to the fixed-fire, the sacred heart/h symbol of the divine eternal. We always say you can’t escape your archetype, and the most obvious examples we have that prove this adage are the way actors are mostly cast in roles that typify their own sun signs. Let’s just say that Leo actors are good at playing controlling, overbearing characters with some kind of god-complex, even if they’re a simple taxi driver. And in the game of life, Leo is most apt to play god. The father principle associated with the sign makes the Leo man patronizing, a (s)word that cuts both ways. Embodying that fifth-house attribute of “the love you give” Leo doesn’t stop to ask others if they are willing to receive it. As is often the case, Leo most often finds himself in a position of power to make or break others’ careers and would-be successes. He typically assumes a fatherly role as some kind of director of, boasting a talent for ushering other talent toward their own artistic, professional goals, even when having a creative career of his own—think Redford’s Sundance or DeNiro’s TriBeCa films enterprises, festivals et al. The Lion most readily finds his way to the top of professional food chains, in position of decider and he will form personal, albeit blurred bonds with those he’s helped along their paths. What he’s done for people is never divorced from who he is to them. And he’s watching and waiting for your latest show of gratitude, just as he is for you to give off even the slightest hint of taking his grace for granted. The Leo giveth and the Leo can taketh away. Sometimes even the closest of friends—well, as close as you can get to the fixed-fire Lion without getting burned or your head bitten off—will find themselves cast out of his intimate sphere for seemingly for the slightest infraction or none at all they can think of. Disloyalty to the Leo can simply be perceived as disagreeing with his opinions or decisions, that dictatorial shadow side emerging, which means his personal life will be increasingly filled with yes men and women. As it is his friendship base is largely made up of clients and colleagues who need defer to him, often along with childhood cronies who’ve genuflected to the Leo since his glory days. Like J.C. Superstar suddenly returned from his trip into the mystic, now aged somewhere in his Leo year span (28-35), focusing now on amassing a following, from his twelve apostles (corresponding to the twelve signs of the zodiac with him at the center of the universe) to the increasing masses, the Leo manchild is designed to draw others to him, rallying them to his way of thinking, causes and point of view. He is rarely not the alpha among his young male peers. The sword Excaliber is a symbol of Arthur’s own divine kingship and endows him with the power to gather his knights of the round table; likewise, the incisive Tom Sawyer, with his suggestively cutting name and cut-up personality, is also a leader of the pack who rallies his peers to do his bidding. It’s not that Leo man is forever stealing the spotlight, rather he is the spotlight and when he is beaming upon others it can make them feel most special. There is something encoded in his cosmic nature that makes people want to both please and be accepted by him. And it’s not wholly unconscious on your part, Leo. Au contraire: Leo is generally aware that the loving attention he pays to others is currency, his presumed love is a drug on which he hooks people. The favors he bestows or any opportunity he provides come with heartstrings attached. You owe him total dedication and devotion, which shouldn’t be expressed too subtly. This greatest player of the game of life is forever keeping score, make no mistake. Of course, Leo sees himself as wholly uncomplicated.

I can’t even. Work to do: In the Major Arcana of the Tarot, the Strength card depicts a lion and, along with the heart, a symbol of strength itself, the other body part ruled by Leo is the backbone, a mark of strength again, along with conviction, determination and courage. Prowess combines the notion of having talents, abilities, expertise and mastery with courage, gallantry and valor. The more evolved, un-cowardly Lion will be in full heart-felt possession of all these elements, which is a tall order. In a way, you might say Leo has to be somewhat delusional in order to walk the exalted path he’s been put upon, otherwise it might appear too daunting. Whereas the Moon, ruling Cancer, represents the mother principle in the cosmos, the Sun, ruling Leo, is that of the father principle. The Moon is nurture, care and intuition, the Sun is might, right, agency and authority, the Arthur archetype as author and architect of manifested dream of Camelot, the famed round table, a reiteration of the twelve thrones of Olympus (and the twelve signs of the zodiac) circled round a central hearth, the heart center of the palace, tended by the goddess Hestia. The round table is referred to as the table of Hestia, connecting Greek mythology with Arthurian legend. The point is, as Arthur finally alighted on the notion that might should be in service to what is right, Leo man increasingly draws the strength and courage of his convictions from the indisputable rightness he feels he brings to the table. It is nearly impossible to convince him, or for him to ever admit, that he is wrong, about anything. Even when his stances are ubiquitously embraced, there is typically a self-righteous, a hubris, in his expression. One might politically side with a Sean Penn or a Robert DeNiro but it’s difficult to deny that they can be smug in their assertions—don’t let’s get started on Steve Martin—which brings the notion of being entitled to one’s opinion to a whole new level. Even when warm and smiley, Leo so fully embodies an easeful self-evidence in positions of power or privilege, unquestionably suited to the spotlights that might entail. It comes as no surprise that the first ever African American president would be born under the sign of Leo. Barack Obama seemed a natural fit for the job and nothing in his attitude, demeanor or very persona suggested anything but. Everything about him screamed of course. And the fact that his presidential slogan started with the word Yes is right in the archetypal pocket of the sign: We have long asserted that Yes is the word of creation, No being negation. Read James Joyce’s Ulysses all the way through and it will hit home the point, or just listen to (Leo) Kate Bush sing The Sensual World, which she lifted from Joyce’s pages. As the sign of Leo and its fifth house is that of creation of every kind, from intellectual or artistic form to literal procreation, and the real and brain children that result, the fixed-fire of the sign is the immortal flame, the light that never goes out, the eternal Yesof the ever expanding universe. Ever listen to (Leo) Louis Armstrong’s musical catalog? In song after song he vocally riffs on the word Yes. From the Old English meaning “may it be so” or “so mote it be” it is an utterance of the will, as if just saying it could even make it happen. It is a word of both acceptance and affirmation, these two elements going hand-in-hand in the Leo personality. Nobody is more self-accepting than the Leo who views the world, and the people in it, as having to bend and adapt to his natural way of being, not to mention his will as well; and one meaning of an affirmation is a declaration of an intention—we’ve all heard of the concept of making lists of affirmations, statements of desired outcomes worded in the present tense as a sort of magical means of manifestation. Well, this is a naturally occurring mechanism in the Leo who is forever in the process of creating chosen outcomes by the sheer force of his will. Affirmation also carries the meaning of providing positive reinforcement, emotional support and encouragement to others, “the love you give” being square in Leo’s wheelhouse. The shadow side of this naturally fatherly energy is that of the aforementioned tyrant which has been exemplified by some of the many film directors who are born under the sign.

Feeling very in-between-y. It is a transition day for sure which still means much can be accomplished if I focus. Am still trying to make this journey work and meet myself at the end of it. Anyway going to make some hay: Leo finds it his duty in life to be as good a sun king as he can, to embody the best of what man can be, and thus not exploit this godlike designation, but to be a positive life force for others, creator as well as creature, a positive life force that, to use the vernacular, gives us life. The shadow side of the king, of course, is the tyrant and anyone acquainted with a Leo man has probably seen it creep into their interactions. Being one so cosmically endowed with nobility, Leo man will take personally every lousy move made by others. Even in circumstances that have naught to do with him, if you cross his well-drawn moral boundaries, you will make a direct insult to his majesty. He is all or nothing on that score. And when you’ve been cast out of the realm of his kinship, you typically remain so. He is one of the zodiac’s greatest grudge holders. It will take major recompense to enter back into his good graces, which rarely happens. He is the golden boy in his youth, the wholesome Picaresque hero around which everything revolves, a typically athletic class clown who charms others with a disarming Tom Sawyer panache. He can nonetheless be emotionally distant and will be hostile, especially, to other males he considers sneaky or conniving. In the cartoon version of life, he is the eternal Archie Andrews (often with the ginger hair to prove it) and always has a rival Reggie on whom to heap his tsk-tsking disapproval. As he matures, his world tends to get smaller, not bigger, his fan base limited to family and a handful of friends. He can be nostalgic, lost in his proverbial glory days; and must take pains to focus on the future, the uncertainty of which he finds uncomfortable. Many twentysomething wunderkinds are born under Leo; and they risk equating inexorable aging with a weakening of their power. For King David and King Arthur, their greatest successes come at an early age. So, Leo must fight not to see himself as over-the-hill at thirty-five; and to consciously and constantly reinvent himself—which can his biggest challenge. The age group ruled by the sign of Leo is actually 28-35, a full seven-year cycle since coming of age, leaving school and establishing oneself, while still being young enough that achieving successes will be that much more impressive, the proverbial young lion. Following the cardinal-water sign of Cancer, associated with flood myths and recovery, a metaphor for, among other things, surviving and healing the more traumatic aspects of one’s childhood conditioning, the fixed-fire sign of Leo is centered on restoration, self-creation and -establishment. Superimposing the zodiac onto the pattern of Old Testament we equate cardinal-fire Aries as the big bang spark of creation, fixed-earth Taurus as the garden, Eden, mutable-air Gemini as consciousness, characterized as duality and the Fall, Cancer, the flood, and next comes Leo, corresponding to the book of Kings and the postdiluvian age of miracles, magic and majesty. Receptive Moon-ruled Cancer’s motto is I feel (the effects of the past), while forceful Sun-ruled Leo’s motto is I will(determine the future), intention being at once, on the surface, something one aims to do and, more profoundly, the power to bring about a desired outcome. Thy will be done, Leo, on earth as it is in heaven.
