Not sleeping well. Certain home readings through the roof. I must now address it all before I get way too, too out of whack. All this stress is just not fair and we will have justice. I did have this pretty crazy dream which I now realize is recurring: We discovered a sort of secret part of the Cape, driving down a road on the ocean side in Truro, where there was this intact retro kind of village like a small Provincetown, and the shops were really beautiful and we were commenting on how nice and quaint it was and there was a corner building that had a store front and looked like a little apartment upstairs and I thought this is for us. There were also white cows and sheep along the road that led toward the ocean, so it was much more like being in Ireland or England or Wales or something than here. And two cars were racing and one was a Volkswagon driven by a woman who had a similar feel to Kathleen the estate agent. That is that. I must focus on what’s right in front of me and this is it: The most mysterious fourth house is also that of endings, which we see reflected in the rock-bottom element endemic to any recovery process. In order to get to the other shore, providence of a promised land new beginnings, it is necessary to bid a final farewell to certain circumstance, attitudes and behavior that no longer serve one’s well-being. Because Cancer man sees things through to the end more than most, he tends to have an intense and profound personal experience of processing finality and uncertainty, which open up onto new vistas. When faced with some such situations where he finds himself “at sea”, and, moreover, in the “belly of a whale”, having to deeply soul search while being in a difficult spot, if not an emotionally dangerous one, tasked in the extreme, facing hard choices, it is ironically a such points that the Cancer man can separate himself from his previous world  and confront that which has been holding him back, so to realize his as yet un-lived potential. In this way, the dynamic of passage from the “home” he comes from to one he is newly creating doesn’t just apply to his actual place and family of origin and the one he builds in adulthood, it pertains to everything—career, workplace, social milieu, intimate relationships, intellectual creative interests, spiritual beliefs and practices, personal evolution. He must be “at home” in all that he does as well as where he does it. And this dynamic will, and should, Cancer, time and time again. This is the pattern of his personal path. The proverbial belly-of-the-whale analogy is of course a reference to the biblical Jonah but it also draws on Cancer man’s more animated archetype of Pinocchio, the two tales providing separate and distinct insights into the Cancer character. In the story of Jonah, which is Hebrew for dove (the very sign of providence from which Noah knows deliverance is at hand), he is a recalcitrant figure, in whom we glimpse the more negative aspect of the Crab man’s own intractable, clinging nature. God orders Jonah to sail to the debauched city of Nineveh to prophesy its destruction lest it’s people repent; thinking the trip and task too difficult, surely not a path of least resistance, Jonah ignores the order and escapes by boat in the opposite direction, only to find God has kicked up a storm. Realizing he may cause the ship’s destruction, he begs its crew to throw him overboard, which they do, whereupon the seas calm and Jonah is swallowed by the whale of the tale, where he remains for three days, begging for God the father’s forgiveness, which granted sees the whale vomit him onto the shore. In Pinocchio’s story, it is the father figure, Gepetto, who is swallowed by the whale; and upon hearing this news, Pinocchio, guided by his own higher power in the form of Jiminy Cricket, travels deep into the sea, entering the belly of the whale, where he and Gepetto build a fire that will smoke and, actually, sneeze them all out onto safe land. Both are stories of redemption, that is what they share; but whereas the Jonah tale is about humbling oneself, seeking forgiveness, and being granted second chances, Pinocchio’s story is about selflessness, summoning strength and courage to save someone he loves, which results in his being transformed into a real boy.

The reports from Wellfleet were slanted as expected. I will leave a message for the Lt. and hope for the best. Lawyer says that he and opposing counsel will visit—eek gads I hope so. We will go see a house in town today. Beautiful location horrible abode. One last night of fattening food before I get back on the health wagon. It is definitely time. Anyway I have my work and I’m leaning into love it, Today’s progress: And there is something quite Après moi, le déluge about the Cancer man’s mindset, that is to say he can be so nihilistic as not concern himself with whatever happens after he’s “gotten his” out of life and is gone. In the film Force Majeure a family of four are on an alpine skiing holiday and, as they are lunching outside, an avalanche occurs. The father runs to save himself, leaving his family at the table—the avalanche doesn’t actually reach them—and he has to deal with the emotional cracks in his marriage and family that ensue. If such a move were to be busted by any man in the zodiac it would likely be the self-protective Crab, who, to be fair, isn’t necessarily premeditatedly so. Taurus 28° (May 18)

Did I mention I made grilled romaine salad with parmesan and this lovely lemony capery garlicky shalloty mustardy kind of sauce with parsley and toasted pinenuts. Yumbo. S. is delayed coming back due to an earring piercing mishap. I’m pretty exhausted but just going to keep plugging along here. Was a semi tetchy evening but I did manage to get the following bits accomplished: Baby Moses is the incarnation of Hope floating on the cardinal-water rush of a river. All his birth mother can do is hope for his recovery and rescue and deliverance by an adoptive one, which one day will allow the sage, higher-powered Moses to deliver his entire native people. The fourth astrological house, mind you, is that of both the home you come from and the one you create for yourself, passage, transition thus being baked into the energy of this sign. From the moment the young Cancer boy gets his emotional bearings, he is already on a journey of recovering from whatever he feels is ailing or lacking in his home and experience of origin.  You might say that the Cancer is born into recovery and remains in it all his life. We even see this mirrored in the biblical Flood myth as Noah was a drunk; his building of an ark can be read as metaphor for making himself a solid promise, a covenant, and his own re-pair being symbolized by all those animals, two by two. Noah may have invented the first recovery program out of personal necessity. Of all the men in the zodiac, Cancer man learns soonest that he should play his cards right, that life is sink or swim, and that it’s never too early to become the you you wish to be, forever hoping for a better life for himself than the one he was born into, or even that which he lived yesterday. The most evolved Cancer man will be rehabilitation incarnate all his days, repairing any faulty infrastructure in his upbringing, yes, but also that of his family history pre-birth. That is to say if there is an ancestral headline that he believes requires rewriting, if not a complete etching out, in his family tree, he will make so. And so, we see another facet of this player’s pretense which can be quite dramatically delusional. The Flood myth can also be one of pure escape and singular self-preservation to the exclusion of a care for others.

Taurus 27° (May 17)

So today is going to be a certain kind of nuts. My list is a mile long. I am going to completely scrub the house down from top to bottom—mop floors and windowsills and baseboards. I will of course wash all the bedding. I decided to Google how to remove candle wax from a table, our dining room one needing a lot of help. I have sinks that I need to Green Gobbler. I wiped down pretty much every surface of the house. I also went to the dump and got my car inspected a ordered a new switch for my window. I made an arugula, sorry rocket, pesto and put in the freeze. I pre-washed some butter leaves for tomorrow’s lunch. I added more fresh herbs to the chowder that’s been brewing on the stove and in the fridge. I cleaned the oven. I went to the bank and saw that this new cannabis store opened in Wellfleet and I took a tour and bought myself a tiny one-hitter, having (if you read this) not been able to find this cool blue crystal pipe I love to use on occasion; but it had been ages since I took a hit of anything that surely this has to be synchronicity. Maybe I’m stoned writing this right now blah ha ha. Despite all the uphill battles right now, most of which are combined into the most emaculate shitshow (yeah, I’m stoned—tomorrow I’ll regret the phrase). I have a perfect shot and I can take it. Doesn’t make sense that at the same time I have huge challenges. But what if neither thing were actually true but all just illusion needing to dissolve. To get to the Pisces place which paradoxically Pisces people might be the most challenged to enter…well not enter since they are most naturally and essentially “there” but, to be fair, it can be overwhelming, to be born into a sign where it’s so all or nothing, nirvana or nullification. Hey this is good stuff (I’m referring to the writing not the cannabis).

Taurus 26° (May 16)

Today was definitely a letting go of sorts. I will get a great deal done and we poise to stick a landing. It’s so strange but I had an urge for some herb today but for the life of me couldn’t find my smoking device. I’m sure it will turn up. Just one of those kind of Sundays…it will be productive and just as well as I don’t take the risk of cannabis making me think I’m smarter than I am. I hate when that happens. In any case I’m not going to do any home chores until tomorrow. It takes so long, when one is alone, to make decent things and then you only end up eating a few bites, often standing up. And then everything else just goes into the larder, to use a posh word. It reminds me of a friend of mine who is really trying to make a success of social media and I now realize she was always performative. It’s the Taurus/Scorpio line.  I think I’m understanding Mahler. I did call the Board of Health— it occurred to me that the overgrown grass could be a hive for ticks. Okay some prevailing thoughts:

I will be making a salad tonight and when I dump a large bowl of water out the back door senor FF will be standing there once again, glaring at me. I’ve had it. The grounds are in a state of complete neglect. I will call board of health to see if something can be done about long grass. I fear ticks. Anyway more police interaction, which is wearing really thin. We will fix this with lawyer on mid week, meanwhile I am convinced FF’s attorney has quit. Radio silence: Anyway I will continue to muse astrological: The Crab will keep his emotions locked up until he establishes a safe means for their expression—in relationships, environment and chosen vocation. It may come as no surprise that irony is also one of Cancer’s superpowers, the ability to get across his point of view, often a sharp and searing one, in a softened, even satirical way. These little jabs, whether directed in his creative work or conversation (typically both), serve as an escape valve for what might otherwise be a deluge of feelings, despair included, he otherwise, purposefully, keeps pent up. He will protect himself to the death from pain and suffering, needing to learn that the former is inevitable, and the latter, a choice. Meanwhile he does what he can to mitigate all difficulty in his life for the paradoxical reason that he sees life as inherently difficult enough. The Cancerian life experience is all about passage, recovery, promise and deliverance, and men of the sign are predisposed to believing they are born into a journey aimed at landing them on a more hospitable shore than from whence they originated. An old friend passed away this week and try as I might, with everything going on, I don’t think I can travel to attend memorial in person. We will send flowers if that’s allowed or make a donation to whatever charity is set up. I will eat lobster roll today and have a quiet day. I will try to get a little bit of writing in the bank. Moving forward with the idea factory: It is said hope floats. And, as the driving force of recovery—metaphorically, something that Cancer man is in all the time—he personifies the very concept. Noah was a drunk, so he is acquainted with experiencing on a personal level. His personality is hinged on the transition from Gemini to Cancer. If the Fall is about experiencing life as a sudden split—Geminis are the most, and mostly benignly, split-personalities—then the Flood is about immediately moving toward the repair of said split. In the Greek flood myth, where the pair of Deucalion and his wife Pyrra, alone, survive the entire wiping out of humanity, it is the goddess Themis who appears to them as they reach the “other shore,” at the very point of recovery, to instruct them on just what they must do next. And she’s the lady for the job.

Another alone time. S. driving up then down and all around. I’ve become super fearful lately. I need to keep an eye on that. All this paranoia feeling like I’m being watched. Anyway I seriously need to make some hay. So here goes: In our original philosophy of the stars, we have discerned the unfolding of the spiral spring of the zodiac, itself, as analogous to that of many “sequences” found in metaphysics and mythology as well as in nature, science, and both practical and esoteric programs. We’ve long equated the first cardinal-fire sign of Aries with big-bang creation, the second fixed-earth Taurus with the garden, Eden, and the mutable-air sign of Gemini with munching on that apple—consciousness characterized as and synonymous with duality (The Twins) and the proverbial Fall, expulsion into chaos. Then along comes Cancer, cardinal-water, the Flood, to wash all cares and sins away, and re-create order, providing recovery and providence itself. Flood myths promise passage, deliverance, and promise itself. Without the Cancer-ruled energy of Hope, there can be no possibility. Water symbolizing emotion and intuition, the process of recovery is indeed an emotional one—the Cancer motto is I Feel—one that involves getting to the source of our human emotional being, which is where we tap into our higher power (represented by Cancer’s so-called opposite sign of Capricorn—not actually opposite at all,  as the two signs are mirrors of, sharing resonances with, each other— the relationship between the two offering a wealth of metaphorical and metaphysical wisdom to be mined. Cancer is likened to a spring or source of a river, a vivid representation of initiating, originating cardinal-water; while Capricorn is re-source, a reservoir, contained by the horn-shaped, cardinal-earth landscape of Capricorn, its name, meaning the goat horn-of-plenty, also a container, preserving bounty. Cancer women, especially, can be gushing while Capricorn women tend to be reserved—men born into these feminine—water and earth—stand in ironic contrasts to their female counterparts. Capricorn man may seem flamboyant, and Cancer man, staid. But the operative word in that sentence was: seem. In truth, Cancer man is gushing on the inside, just as Capricorn man is more somber than he may be letting on.  In call and response, Cancer Hope finds its answer in Capricorn Faith. Someone wise once said that, “hope is faith holding its hand out in the dark.” Mythically, too, these signs are linked, in that we see the story of the baby prince Moses, given passage, carried along a river, from one mother to another, floating on promise of deliverance, a metaphor for Cancer man’s reliance on, and ability to elicit (m)others’ care for him as a means of his own desired momentum; while the story of adult Moses, going gray all of a sudden, in discussion with a burning bush, receiving a list of ten shalt-nots—the containment, restriction, structuring of Capricorn—portrays the faithful, old-soul hierophantic personality of men of that tenth sign.

Today a BOH representative will show up on the property expecting a major environmental issue which of course there wasn’t. The people across the road are back adding to the stresses. I’m not going to get anything done today I’m afraid other than a little writing: The fourth astrological house under Cancer’s rule kicks off the second quadrant of the zodiac, the threshold being at the very bottom, the nadir, of the cosmic wheel. This sweet spot in an astrological chart points to our most inner nature, and the fourth house is thus that of our home, domesticity and private life, something in particular Cancer man has a natural and enviable ability to cultivate. He carefully picks and chooses interests, hobbies, sports that involve little to no interaction with others, except perhaps a single coach, trainer or instructor whose undivided attention he can command. He is covetous of time spent as such for the likely reason that he will be otherwise largely dedicated to responsibilities and care of others on the domestic front, which falls under his sign’s astrological fourth-house rule. Family is arguably more important to this man than any other. And he possesses the perfect temperament for playing house husband, should his partner be more professionally engaged, and as rearer of children. Still he will plot out a path for creative or intellectual fulfillment and bide his time until it becomes his turn to prioritize career, which he will do with tunnel vision and the power of a newly freed, heretofore coiled spring. Though, Cancer man is the least likely to be among them, the first thing we tell clients who come to see us for the first time is that the Sun placement in their charts really signifies the hero’s journey, that it to say the you whom you are becoming. The Sun signifies completion, a full circle surrounding a central dot, which symbolizes the individual in a perfectly centered sphere of their own making, their sense of fulfillment and wholeness.
