Ports Unknown

Gemini 12° (June 1)

Rabbit, rabbit. Slow morning but I haven’t slept as well as I did last night in probably a year. I’ve been taking a long time to write chapters but I’m hoping that now that I have a third of the book in the can that I can start speeding up for the second third and get that handed in so I can then have the rest trickle in. We shall see. The real estate market sucks and we aren’t fully on the same page as to how to approach it, but I am going to do my level best to make the right choices. Now, on to writing the necessary six-to-eight pages that will henceforth characterize the next fifty-six days (and nights): In our first book, Sextrology, the Leo man chapter is titled The Natural. This speaks to recognizing elements of self that are innately prominent, such talents and skills with which he was gifted in this lifetime. He won’t give time and attention to all his many natural abilities of, only those that inspire his true passion. The fixed-fire sign of Leo is a steady, slow burn; and once he has his heart set on a life pursuit, the Lion likewise sinks his teeth into it, most often proving that the realization of goals and dreams is largely due to never giving up on them. Being a Leo man is an inside-out affair, and, despite a ferocious determination, nothing about his life journey should have the slightest whiff of an uphill battle. You are here to meet your destiny on a level playing field, Leo Yeah, we’re talking to you. Leo shouldn’t subscribe to trying to grab for brass rings—his notion of reward is an ongoing process of being able to shine, more and more, through the creative revelation of his inborn endowments. All of the fire signs share a similar sense of being divinely touched, appointed or otherwise ordained; fire symbolizes spirit, in astrology and other esoteric disciplines: a divine spark (Aries), eternal flame (Leo) or flashes of genius (Sagittarius) that cannot be learned or otherwise gained through experience—you either got it or you don’t. The Leo man is pretty much programmed to pursue creative, career and personal goals, that is to say a winning combination of all three, at which he’s all but certain to excel. Life for him should be a no-brainer one way or another, and should he not be able to slam-dunk in a desired career role or professional field, say, one for which he burns with passion, he will likely work a job about which he cares little to absolutely nothing. In his career, specifically, Leo is typically either a great success or a complete underachiever. Either way, he’s not going to sweat some middling life pursuit that provides challenge but no loving feeling. He would sooner work some, even menial job that he could do in his sleep and front-burner non-vocational passions—activities, hobbies, artistic or sporting interests—for which he has the greatest affinity, and thus smack to him of a genuine experience.

Green Resin

Gemini 11° (May 31)

Two Favorite clients today. I think I’m starting a new regime but am reminded that it is a holiday—I forgot—so one more day before the purge begins, which is a fine thing. I did precious little as I want to use the day to truly rest in a way I haven’t in a while. The big inhale before the plunge. I have some fundraising copy I can draft on this so-called day off: I’m going to keep this short and sweet. Last year at this time, knowing there would be no AFTERGLOW FESTIVAL in 2020, we quickly pivoted our operations to create an artist-relief initiative, commissioning a dozen artists to create works that they could perform on our stage at a future date. Although we raised just a fraction of what we normally do year on year—many regular sponsors were unsure about their own finances in these troubling times—we not only kept many performers afloat, but we also became a model for other arts organizations, much bigger than our own, some with which we’ve partnered over the years, to emulate in their own relief efforts for artists. It was my honor to participate with other non-profit arts professionals in many virtual think tanks and seminars aimed at supporting our creative community.

As Afterglow launched in 2011, last year would have been year ten of the festival, but we can still hope that year ten will materialize, now, in 2021! As I write this the jury is still out—our hosting venue is hoping that we can stage the festival, not in September, but in November instead this year. Fingers crossed. In any case I can no longer play chicken with fundraising in case the shows do indeed go on. That said, if this year turns out to be a repeat of the last, we will again funnel what funds we do raise into more commissions for artists to create works to be performed at a later date. In the meantime, we have these last two years personally absorbed all other costs so that any monies the non-profit raises go directly to the performers, many of them young and not firmly established, who need assistance most.

No Rest For The Weary

Gemini 10° (May 30)

I will enter another chapter today which is very good news. It’s been cold and rainy all weekend and I’m secretly thrilled about it. There is no more wiggle room in my schedule but tomorrow we have to clients and then I have a clear shot. I am using the next two months to kill a few birds. Now this: In the Greek flood myth, Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha are met by the goddess Themis, “the Lady of Good Counsel,” when they ultimately reach dry land. She instructs them to throw the bones (stones) of their mother (Gaia) over their shoulders to repopulate the earth, the ones he threw turning to men, hers to woman. A powerful and central goddess, she is one of the few from the generation of Titans to remain important among the next generation of Olympians, with whose chief, Zeus, she had six children, the Horae and the Morae, the seasons and the fates, respectively. Horae means: “the right moment,” embodying the correctness of order unfolding in time. Themis’ name itself means “to put in place”; she is the goddess of natural law and custom, the personification of divine or cosmic order, separate from manmade ordinances. The word themis, which at least dates back to Homer, is a blanket term for customs, traditions, mores and folkways—surprise—all those self-same attributes of the fourth astrological house. The seasons sequence the year, the fates measure out our lives, both divinely ordered. The notion that there is a proper place for every little thing, right customs and correct procedures—and this is the overriding point—which are in keeping with the cosmic order, the divine plan, is what energy of the sign of Cancer is all about. But here’s the rub: there is no factual hard-and-fast rule as to what should go where, or what actions we must take, or customs we should spouse, by decree of divine order. It isn’t something we can collectively think up or pin down into legislation—anyway what we are talking about here is separate from manmade laws. Think about it. Themis bids us accept the fact that there is a right and proper way to conduct oneself, a standard by which we can and must “come correct,” to coin the phrase of a late fashion icon, and yet one must intuit what that standard should be. It isn’t knowledge accessible to our intellect. You must feel what that means. You have to go with your gut. Even right now, Cancer if you were to decide a moral question or declare some custom to be in keeping with what you perceive as divine law, it would feel something like using a compass to find your bearings. Themis asks you to perform this sort of internal scan, more than that, she requires that you become a mystic, to access and acquire knowledge by way of your emotions which are, in the processes, activated, transmuted even, into intuition. To intuit is to put out those feelers, to extend far down into ourselves and far out into the cosmos—inner and outer space may be one and the same thing—so to receive the mystical answers to our illogical questions on how we should order or lives, here, so below, as to be most aligned with what is macrocosmically such an ordered universe, as above. There is way more to this goddess who is aptly complex, being the patron deity of Cancer woman, who, she’d be the first to admit, reveals the layers of her character and very being, slowly over time—even, or especially, to herself.

Nine Down

Gemini 9° (May 29)

A Bob Marley morning. The rain last night blew the basement door open. Now to work: Charity beginning at home, which is all the more central to the Cancer woman, that which the Crab is designed to give, foremost, to her family is a sense of safety and security without their ever being stifled. She inspires self-sufficiency in her children, especially, teaching by example, or she should do, that so long as one acts from a place of good intentions, one need never have regret. Think of Cinderella with her ashy name pointing to her humbled state of personal ruin, run ragged by mean girls, tormented, rejected, disenfranchised and alone. She may feel sad, but never bitter or revengeful. Her loneliness is what inspires longing. And it is in her solitude that she creates sacred space where that longing summons her higher power, prince and palace. She isn’t so codependent as to invite her stepfamily to live with her; she owes them nothing because she only ever gave to them. (She does forgive them, which is key.) In a world of dysfunctional families, the type from which the Cancer woman typically comes, the Crab is the most expert at taking strict inventory of such patterns that she is determined not to repeat in the home she creates for herself and her progeny. There is much from her history and home of origin that she is determined to leave in the past in building her future. Making no show of it, it should come as no surprise, given her Moon rulership, that she is most comfortable in her role as mother, which she tends to play, to some degree, to her partner as well. Though she is rarely not romantically linked dating back to earliest teenage, Cancer woman tends to marry relatively late in life, typically not until after sowing her fair share of wild oats; and she is inclined to marry, or otherwise commit long-term to someone some, often many, years her junior. Doing so isn’t necessarily a recipe for her being the more central and dominant figure in the household, but more times than not, this is exactly the case. Her partner tends to defer to her on most matters, while she plays the wise woman role to the hilt. Her partner might act like something of a big kid, a youthful spirit appealing to the Cancer, but any serious symptoms of arrested development will be treated with heavy doses of tough love and cleared up without delay. Everybody pulls their weight in the family run by the Crab, who will turn into a giant one if you cross her one to many times.

Chill Guy

Gemini 8° (May 28)

Relatively quiet day just getting some thoughts on virtual paper: Flood myths archetypally reside in the psyches of all Moonchildren. In the biblical line we draw a parallel between the old book and sequence of the signs. Aries, cardinal-fire, is the sparky big bang of creation; Taurus, fixed-earth, is the garden, Eden; Gemini, mutable-air, is biting into that apple, the fall, consciousness expressed as duality of opposites, it’s motto is I think, original sin city; then along comes Cancer, cardinal-water, the flood, to wash all the ills of the world away. Flood myths are about recovery, that upper-case Hope that floats, and deliverance; and it is the metaphorical and metaphysical summing up of your life, Cancer. You’re supposed to feel that you were born into some state of chaos, away from which you immediately start swimming. Because the Moonchild is wild one so often, early in her life, many a Cancer woman will find herself in some kind of recovery program in any case—we have long maintained that “the zodiac is the original twelve-step program,” indeed if you were to superimpose the steps on the signs you’d perceive a great many similarities. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves is the fourth step in AA, which very much relates to the most mysterious fourth astrological house, which sits at the base of the wheel of the zodiac, the nadir, and represents the inner most private aspect of a person, where, you might say, we are most a mystery to ourselves. As, the house of the home you come from and the home you create for yourself it speaks to certain passage, what you carry with you, and so it suggests a certain taking of inventory as well, and a moral one at that. It is the house of mores and moral codes, customs and folkways, as well as inheritances, both material and genetic, our real and metaphoric DNA. Searching and fearless would sure apply to any characters in flood myths, which, it’s important to note, are found in the mythologies of most ancient peoples all over the planet, despite their isolation from another. And they are Cancer watchwords if ever there were some, especially as they correspond to the inner work women of the sign are wont to do, the soul-searching personal journey of the Crab following along a landscape of introspection. Taking a moral inventory is one and the same as chronicling your own codes and customs by which to live by, providing yourself a compass with which to navigate your journey, your recovery and ultimate deliverance. The sign of Cancer rules the gut, instincts and intuition. A moral compass isn’t powered by your mind, but by emotions, your sign’s motto, I feel. Your mind can play tricks on you and rationalize any behavior you might consider amoral; but your gut will never lie. The sign also rules the breasts, symbolic of the Cancer individual’s exceedingly nurturing nature. And these body parts metaphorically work hand in hand. Because in doing any kind of soul search—and let’s face it: the taking of a moral inventory is occurring in us at every moment—the next right thing for a Cancer woman to do is always going to be that which fosters care, sustenance, guidance, growth, wherewithal, wisdom, solace, consolation, support, relief, promise, safety, and any infinite number of provisions that the Cancer feels it is in her power to pass along to others or the environment at large.

Get Ready Here I Come

Gemini 7° (May 27)

Bank and Eastham. Moving things along ever so gently. I’m ready. Here’s some words: As we’ve so often said, the whole of Cancer woman’s life is a journey out of what seems like chaos in her youth toward the perception of a natural rhythm, an ebb and flow as befits her tide-ruler Moon. To extend the water analogy, she can tucker herself out, thrashing about, typically in protest of restraints that are put upon her in youth, and suffer real bouts of panic in the process, until such time as she stops struggling, relaxes into her experience, alternately floating and treading lightly. Going with the current (that is to say the present) speeds her trip toward the future, on which she is most certainly focused; and with a calm, clear eye she can more precisely survey the big picture of what lies down river. It may be very lucrative for the intuitive Crab to know that she can often make a killing with investments, stock, money, or real-estate markets, as her powers of prediction are unparalleled. Projecting her inklings into possible future payouts is actually a means of institutionalizing her natural intuition, putting it into practice and honing it over time. Whether or not it is her chosen profession, every Cancer woman is a trend analyst of some kind. It’s one and the same as her ability to foretell where this culture or that, or the whole human race, for that matter, is headed. For, all Cancer women are also sociologists. As such, you can fall prey to nostalgia, Cancer, that longing aspect of your nature being bi-directional; and though it is always best not to dwell, by astrological design, it is your birthright to look to those fourth-house customs, folkways, traditions, mores and, above all, moral codes that you value from the past, and to bring them forward in what ways you can. Embodying what you believe is the first order there, seeking out like hearts and minds is the second. And, in the raising of a family, or in the proliferation of your valued counsel in private or professional settings or both, you can make a real impact and protect certain social and cultural codes that you hold dear, especially if they are threatened or in danger of being lost. Typically, it is along these lines that Cancer woman’s activism kicks in, ensuring that progress that’s already made isn’t eroded or rolled back. The whole of the Moonchild’s life constitutes a shift from experiencing life from an accidental perspective to an intentional one. Being born a Cancer woman can feel like being tossed into some rolling rapids, that everything is randomly happening to her and that experience is often a rather desperate struggle to keep your head above water and find something solid to hold onto. As she evolves, Cancer comes to realize that she can take in what life is throwing at her, even in rapid succession, and view it all as information,  labeling it one big “if so” and allow it to inform “then what” she intends to do with said information. With life itself as her scene partner, like the great actor she is, Cancer will let whatever “line” she’s being delivered to move in on her, fully, emotionally, so to inspire strong motivation in her to act and achieve her next objective. She may have to constantly change tack in order to do so. As when literally sailing a boat, changing tack back and forth, it can feel as if you’re forever going sideways and not getting anywhere, but from a gods-eye perspective, a divine, cosmic, universal point of view, it looks clear that you are going steadily forward in a straight line.

Just Here To Read The Meter

Gemini 6° (May 26)

The main goals for today are to be able to text all three parties, senor FF and lawyers, at once in case of emergencies. That will not happen. I’m not going to dwell on what a drag this all is. I know what I have to do. Work to do: Needless to say, not every Cancer woman has a wicked, or even withholding, mother who used her as a house maid, but experience has shown that the majority of Moonchildren reading this will, sadly, relate. Such that the notion of mother can loom negatively large in the context of Cancer’s early life. Even if her mother was a totally benign presence, it might be that she was preoccupied with career or other concerns such that the Cancer girl had to pick up the slack on the domestic front. Whatever the particulars, Cancer typically begins to adopt a sort of deprivation-and-reward pattern in her attitude and behavior, racing through the doldrums of domestic responsibilities, then rushing out to have a ball with some charming prince/ss with a potential shoe fetish. The fourth astrological house associated with Cancer is called the house of home, specifically both the home one comes from and the home one creates for oneself in their maturity, the age span ruled by the sign being 21-28. The house also rules customs, inheritances, ancestry, property and other such things that can be passed down through generations. Come adulthood, the Cancer woman will have been conditioned such that she might risk taking some of the customs of her home of origin with her when setting up her own house. And we’re not talking end tables here but learned, reactionary behavior. Any admonishing aspects of her young life, whether or not they were perpetrated by an ogre of a parent, might carry over with her as forms of self-punishment to be followed by so-called rewards, which might, in the end, actually constitute additional forms of self-abuse. In truth, Cancer woman tends to be among the more party animalistic portion of the female population, and self-regulation can become increasingly dicey if she’s not careful. Moonchildren are sensitive creatures with volatile emotions that pool just below the surface of their being, such that their moods (actually blamed on/named for their ruler Moon) can be altered dramatically not only by drugs or alcohol but also by their own strong chemical reactions to situational stimuli or even their own anxieties, memories, traumas and other internal affairs. Put it all together and it can be a cocktail shaker of histrionics the likes of which nobody needs ever see, let alone experience, as she often does, firsthand. Just as there is a perpetual light and dark side to her ruler Moon, the Crab exhibits sharply defined dualities in her personality. All the signs, with their inherent superpowers, also have their shadow sides; it’s just that Cancer’s might be the darkest of them all, but that’s the law of compensation for you, offsetting what is so potentially luminous a persona as she. Other stark contrasts include being dutiful in the extreme then letting her hair down so completely that our homegirl Cinderella gives Rapunzel a run for her money. The downside of having such illimitable energy is a tendency to burn the proverbial candle at both ends more fiercely and for longer periods of time than most others could bear, and Cancer learns time and again she is indefatigable to a fault.

North By Northeast

Gemini 5° (May 25)

Today will be my first supermarathon day and I have to let the content suffer a bit in the process. Speed over accuracy today. Head down power through: In our book Sextrology, the Cancer woman chapter is titled The Pearl which metaphorically speaks to someone of rare, fine and admirable quality. Pearls are actually formed as a result of the mollusk employing a defense mechanism, a triggered immune response, to protect against parasites; so too does the Cancer woman become a fine and venerable pearl of wisdom by keeping her own defenses—that Crab shell—strong. Boundaries are crucial for the Cancer woman, who largely grows up having them crossed on a regular basis before she’s old enough to know their importance in the first place; and, of course, they work both ways, and it naturally follows that part and parcel of having what should be your own boundaries crossed is not knowing when you’re stepping over such lines yourself. Of all the signs, Cancer woman can be the most full-on in her youth, a high-energy, so often high-maintenance character you might at times wish came with an off switch. Cardinal-water points to a well-spring, a source of a rushing, rolling river, and the rain that sees it rise and flood. (In our philosophy cardinal Cancer is the fresh-water sign, fixed Scorpio is akin to ice and other crystals, and mutable Pisces is the salty primordial sea, foam, mists, fog and vapor.) The waters of Cancer are alternately life-giving, most civilizations having sprung up in fertile river valleys, and, as the flood myths associated with the sign suggest, devastating to biblical proportions. The boundless energy of the young Cancer can make her spirited in the extreme, and often rambunctious, and it isn’t a stretch to say she comes at you like that rushing river, bursting into any given scene, and it can warrant catching your breath. She can be a lot, and yet so energized a presence as to breathe new, extra life into any setting or situation. The force of a river can power mills and turbines and entire grids, but it must be properly harnessed to do so. For Cancer woman it really is about getting back to the source, a term so central to her archetype. The second quadrant of the zodiac is hinged on emotional level, metaphysically speaking, and that of environment, as they do go hand in hand. The mother principle of Cancer’s ruler Moon portrays the environment (planet, universe) as a present, female source of all creation hinged on nurture, in direct contrast to the father principle of Leo’s ruler Sun which suggests a distant, male force determined by authority. The irony for the young Cancer, especially, is that she can often look to the men in her lives for answers, support and comfort, and typically as a result of feeling a lack of a strong, safe male presence in her earliest upbringing. We have long alluded to the fact, for reasons we cannot explain except by virtue of astrology, that Cancer girls grow up in female-dominated households; and even when they, say, have several brothers for siblings, will be singled out by domineering mother figure who keep the Crab on an extremely short leash and task her with more than her fair share of chores and responsibilities. We never stray very far from the Cinderella character when working with the Cancer female, for the fairy tale, with its midnight curfew and anthropomorphic nocturnal creatures, is a powerful archetype to work with for women of the sign. It is the putting out feelers of Cinderella’s longing that conjures her own higher power in the form of the fairy godmother, who can be seen as an exalted aspect of self, as her own dearly departed mother in spirit form, as that universal source of nurture that is the mother principle itself, and, of course, all of the above.

The Nerves

Gemini 4° (May 24)

Tried to fall back but It won’t let me. So I will just keep moving the needle. (I am having audio hallucinations with the window fan in.) I’m so tired I’m nauseous. Oh well I’m going to try to make the writing fun today. Yesterday’s news was pretty spectacular and now we have something in our back pocket. I’m going to let that cheer me on. Shooting for ten pages today! Let’s see what I can come up with:To live within the confines of what is widely viewed by the general population as an “accepted” lifestyle is part and parcel of the Crab man’s protective shell. Self-acceptance is another story: Of all the men in the zodiac, Cancer is most apt to keep hidden elements of his true nature which he labels weird or abnormal. Astrology’s Prince Charming typically won’t let it be known that he likes to wear Cinderella’s slippers when she’s not home. Repression, leading to depression, is something which the Crab must keep a watchful eye on. He is so good and hiding inner struggle that others are rarely of any help should he begin to buckle under his inner pressures. Cancer is prone to trying to distract himself from internal affairs by making externals a priority if not an obsession. Many a Moonchild’s fortune and mansion were built upon compulsively working and earning as a means of diverting attention away from psychological and emotional issues that challenge, indeed threaten the status quo Cancer is determined to sustain. Keeping up appearances and the proverbial it together all too easily become part of his overall pretense, which often bleeds into his familial relations. For starters, he is drawn to strong-willed partners who, perhaps unlike is own parents, don’t show signs of personal weakness. If anything, he will bond with authoritative, self-preservational types who not only don’t exhibit  much in the way of human frailty, but who have little tolerance for it in others. A strong moral compass, even a skewed one, is viewed as an anchor for the Cancer who fears such strong undercurrents that might carry him off in directions he deems undesirable, even dangerous. Typically feeling unmoored in youth, raised in a family where he was largely left to his own devices, he longs for structure; as such, he often ends up in relationships with bossy types who task him with to-dos, which he finds to be an opportunity, a source, for appreciation. He often is the more nurturing parent, which also falls under fourth house rule, although he expresses his affection mostly through providing guidance and discipline, rather than doting on or otherwise indulging his children. He may not show it, thankfully, but he tends to have extremely high expectations of his children, especially when it comes to their intellect and creativity, as he tends to care little about their sporting ability or other such physical feats. If he were to have a child that he secretly considered, say, dim, he would take it very personally and internalize his disappointment, while expressing a sort of vague tolerance toward the child that others might barely notice. This is the thing about Cancer man: Except to the keenest of observers, the emotional and psychological make-up of the Moonchild seems to be, on the whole, calm if not bordering on placid. But as we say the more seeming mild-mannered and composed, if not outright rehearsed, the Cancer man seems to be, one can expect that he is that much more in a whirlpool of turmoil beneath the surface.

Roman Hologram

Gemini 3° (May 23)

Playing a tiny bit of catch-up this morning and then onto a new chapter. I am on a very tight schedule now but that’s okay. The facility seems to be there, and we can always fix stuff in post. We will find out today about any travel plans. Early to bed early to rise all this week. Keeping the focus on the work: The monomyth, according to Joseph Campbell, who used the term interchangeably with the hero’s journey, compromises certain cycles, including miraculous birth, departure, initiation and return that repeatedly characterized said journey in ancient mythology. The zodiac itself traces the pattern of the monomyth; and just as we have matched the signs in consecutive order with the sequence of books of the Old Testament, we have also applied the zodiac’s pattern to the Christ story comprising the New Testament, something we stumbled upon one year by way of preparing an Xmas theme for one of our live musical-comedy holiday shows we have been known to perform. The story starts with a star, of course, which appears first to the little lambs and the shepherds on the hilltops (Aries), then it moves to the manger, a cow trough (Taurus) for the adoration, next we know Jesus is something of a mercurial street urchin already stirring up controversy in the market place (Gemini), and then suddenly he’s gone, the theory being that he took passage to the east to study mysticism, (Cancer)…and the pattern continues through the rest of the signs, but we won’t bore you further in this. It is, however, important to note that mysticism is defined as wisdom which can only be acquired by way of intuition, that is to say, not via the mind (the realm of Gemini, whose motto is I think). It belongs to the estate of Cancer and its ruler Moon, the queen of tides, whose waters symbolize two things—emotion and intuition—both of which fall under this sign’s motto, I feel. As we’ve indicated, the personal evolutionary path of the Cancer man is nearly, if not totally, one and the same with Campbell’s monomyth and its patterning, which the plot of Charles Dicken’s David Copperfield, for example, follows pretty much to a tee. Many a Moonchild may read this and perhaps emit a tiny gasp, as, for reasons only astrology can explain, guys of this sign tend to relate strongly to the title character—now you have some increased insight as to why, our fine Cancer fellow. In real-life terms, Cancer boy is often born into a family that is emotionally loaded at the time, perhaps fueled by, or even stemming from the advent of his birth. His mother may’ve been told she couldn’t conceive, or she may’ve become pregnant despite concerted efforts not to, or they may be questions surrounding his literal legitimacy.  (I may need to re-think/re-write this bit) More often than not there is some kind of disconnect: his father may be actually absent or just emotionally so; his mother might be stern, withholding or generally unfeeling; one or both of his parents may have already left the bond and remarried by the time he learns to walk and talk, and he will remain the soul offspring of a fleeting union. Whatever the particulars, most Cancer man would admit that they were born at a time of flux on the familial front. Often it is the case that the Moonbaby is born to parents with alcohol or substance abuse issues and thus not fully present in that sense. The point is, from the moment he can size up the situation, Cancer boy goes in search of a sense of what he considers normalcy, which is akin to legitimacy, in that he yearns for a combination of what he deems regular and what is real.
